Brenda Lee Reed says Sleep is a Vital Component to a Healthy Life

Brenda Lee Reed | October, 02, 2012 | by 0 Comments
Brenda Lee Reed Brenda Lee Reed, founder of Genesis Healing Center and nationally recognized wellness expert, says that sleep is as important as a healthy diet to maintain a balanced life, a healthy weight, and an alert mind.

Sleep doesn’t come easy to everyone, acknowledges Brenda Lee Reed. Most Americans experience bouts of sleeplessness at some point in their life. The excitement of moving off to college, anticipation of an upcoming event, or the arrival of a new baby are all known to cause weeks, sometimes months, of poor sleep. But, when sleep doesn’t get back on track, Brenda Lee Reed says that it can affect more than just your energy level–it can actually cause damage to cells and increase the risk of abdominal fat.

Brenda Lee Reed offers a few tips on how to get the sleep needed to look, feel, and simply be the best you can be:

Nix the Nicotine, Ax the Alcohol, and Cut the Caffeine

A stiff drink and a cigarette are not only bad for you altogether but might make sleep a little more elusive than you want it to be, says Brenda Lee Reed. Nicotine is a natural stimulant and can cause jitteriness and restlessness, just like coffee and chocolate. Alcohol produces a relaxed state for a while but can disrupt the nervous system and cause night-waking and poor sleep in the early morning hours, says Brenda Lee Reed.

Clear Your Mind and Your Bedroom

Brenda Lee Reed says that your bedroom should be an escape from the day. Don’t clutter it up with paperwork, computers, and televisions. These things are for the day, says Brenda Lee Reed. Create a harmony in your sleeping area that invokes a sense of calm and relaxation. A white noise machine or a ceiling fan can provide a lulling sound to help you drift away to dreamland. And, Brenda Lee Reed points out that a comfortable temperature can assist with falling – and staying – asleep.

Eat and Exercise Early

According to Brenda Lee Reed, having dinner a few to several hours before bedtime helps you get to sleep. Eating just before bed can cause discomfort from digestion as well as heartburn and insomnia. Brenda Lee Reed suggests working out in the morning or early afternoon instead of waiting until just before bed. Exercise is important to your health, but taking a quick jog or a dance class before bed will raise your endorphin levels and make it harder to sleep. It increases the heart rate and makes the body feel more awake than relaxed, says Brenda Lee Reed.

The most important thing is to find what works for you, says Brenda Lee Reed. Take a bath, read the paper, or snuggle with your favorite person. Find a routine that helps your body signal that it’s time to shut down. As the old saying goes, “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a [person] healthy, wealthy, and wise.” At the very least, it can’t hurt, says Brenda Lee Reed.
